NYU GSAS Fellowships

Public Humanities Doctoral Fellowship Program
Opens Aug 19 2025 12:00 AM (EDT)
Deadline Oct 8 2025 11:59 PM (EDT)
Description

ABOUT

Public Humanities Doctoral Fellowships are academic year fellowships that offer advanced doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences the opportunity to gain public-facing experience at a range of cultural and educational institutions. Students selected for these working fellowships will be able to explore different modes of public engagement and see firsthand how their extensive skills, knowledge, and talents can be applied at such institutions, all while exploring different roles and career options available to PhD graduates.

Fellows work up to 20 hours a week at one of the sites listed below and participate in mandatory professional development workshops over the course of the academic year. Fellows receive a year of fellowship support equivalent to the GSAS minimum MacCracken stipend. For fellows still within their MacCracken award term, the waiver of maintenance of matriculation fees, and 100% coverage in the NYU comprehensive health insurance plan for an individual will be covered under the terms of the MacCracken award. For non-MacCracken fellows as well as fellows beyond the term of their MacCracken award but still financial aid eligible, a waiver of maintenance of matriculation fees, and 100% coverage in the NYU comprehensive health insurance plan for an individual will also be included in the award.

ELIGIBILTY

  1.  Open to Humanities and Social Sciences GSAS PhD students
  2. Fellows must have a minimum grade point average of 3.3 and must have earned 100 percent of credits required for the degree by August 2026 (courses with I, NR, W, and F grades are not considered successfully completed).
  3.  During the award year 2026-2027, fellows must be within seven years of their first term of enrollment in the doctoral program. Eligibility beyond seven years may be extended on an exception basis, consistent with the Graduate School's normal review of financial aid eligibility. The common reasons for extension are (a) time off for an official leave of absence; (b) up to four semesters of fieldwork, if the field work occurred within the first seven years of enrollment and the student did not receive a GSAS or other institutional stipend for the semester(s); and (c) exceptional academic circumstances that are beyond the student's control (e.g., the academic advisor left; serious illness).
  4. Priority will be given to those students who have taken at least one of the two Core Public Humanities courses offered by the Public Humanities Initiative.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Application Form
  • Short Answer Responses
  • Resume and Cover Letter for each position of interest (There is no limit on how many open positions students may apply for). Resumes should be no longer than one page.
  • Letter of support from the student's advisor that addresses the benefits of participation in this program for the fellow's professional development.
  • ***If you are applying to a site that asks additional questions in the position description, please include your answers to these in the cover letter attachment.***
